Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    Admission to UMD is competitive and the number of students seeking admission exceeds the number who can be accommodated. Admission is based on the overall strength of the student's academic performance and is assessed through a holistic review.
  • Official Transcripts:
    An official copy of your college transcripts listing all courses attempted is required. If you have completed fewer than 30 semester or 45 quarter hours post high school graduation, an official high school transcript is required.
  • SAT Scores:
    UMD is currently test-optional and has extended this policy through to the Spring and Fall 2027 application cycles.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    You may choose to submit a letter of recommendation. Recommendations must be sent to us directly from the recommender, and they can be written by anyone of the applicant's choosing including teachers, counselors, coaches and mentors.
  • Essay:
    Please describe your past academic experiences and your reasons for wishing to enroll at UMD at this point in your academic career. Your essay should be no more than 300 words.
  • Application Fee:
    Nonrefundable application fee of $80 via credit card unless you have a fee waiver (cash and checks are not accepted).
  • Interview:
    Students seeking enrollment into the School of Music must submit an application supplement and audition.
  • Other Requirements:
    Activities and awards list or resume | Detail your efforts in the community, arts, leadership, athletics, family involvements, work experience and other extracurricular activities and hobbies in order of interest to you.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    College-level courses completed at regionally accredited institutions with a grade of C- or higher will be accepted. Grades of D- or higher from Maryland public institutions will be accepted.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    A maximum of 70 credits from 2-year institutions can be applied to degree requirements at UMD. A maximum of 90 credits can be applied to degree requirements from a combination of 2-year institutions, 4-year institutions and prior learning credits.
